Working in the Chu Pa mountains, Delta Company's mission was to secure the crest of the Chu Pa mountain while other companies cleared the northwestern slope of the mountain.  On that day 1st platoon ran into a North Vietnamese ambush and was taking heavy enemy fire.

Sgt. Ator gives the 'thumbs down' gesture from the back of the Huey.

Recollections of Grady Wallis, Delta Co:
When we left the Rock Quarry in late January the platoon linked up with Bravo Company in the Chu Pa area.  Choppers took 1st platoon to the top of the mountain, with two platoons of Bravo Company, and on the 9th of February they began their assault down the mountain.  1st platoon was ambushed and both Johnnie Ator and a new man, Bobby Gene Gamble, were killed.

Sgt. Ator was from Pittsfield, Illinois.
