I received a letter from
Gen. Keller on 25 Apr 01 which included the following
synopsis of his
Biography...
...Terry E. Bender
"I joined the
14th (in Panama) as a young 2nd Lieutenant...
"After leaving
Panama in 1941, I joined the 32nd Infantry of the 7th Division at Ft.
Ord, California as a Rifle Company Commander. I stayed with the Division
throughout the war including ATTW, Philippines, Okinawa and ended up in
the early occupation of Korea. I was successively Battalion Commander
and finally regimental Commander of the 32nd Infantry in Okinawa.
"After that, I
had assignments at West Point; the Far East Command; the Department of
the Army; and the National Security Agency.
"During my
service, I was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal; Silver Star with
one Oak Leaf Cluster; Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters; Bronze
Star with three Oak Leaf Clusters; The Army Commendation Medal and the
Combat Infantryman's Badge. I retired in 1969."
Gen. Keller now lives in
retirement in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
James H. Keller was an officer in I Co. about 1940. He later became a
BG.
